FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: London Ray

This week’s Fashionista may be named after the British capitol, but her outfit caught my eye thanks to its laid back, California-girl vibe. I’m also officially obsessed with the small but impactful pop of neon orange on the trim of her lace blouse, which adds just the right amount of edge to her otherwise casual and feminine look.

Name: London Ray

Major: Fashion Merchandising

Year: Senior

CollegeFashionista: What are trends are you most looking forward to wearing this summer? Are there any that you're really not into?

London Ray: I am not really into following trends because I just do my own thing, really. What I have seen that I like are boyfriend jeans that are light wash and very worn, rolled up at the ankle with a simple T-shirt, statement necklace and wedges or high heel sandals. I also love the sheer looks that we see with high-low dresses and skirts. Finally, I am loving tailored crop tops with high-waisted shorts and skirts. Very pin-upish, but the looks I've seen make it more modern and approachable for anyone.

CF: What's your best advice for making neons look more polished?

LR: Neons must be balanced with a neutral to look polished, in my opinion. I love neons with black, camel, blush and white, but you have to be careful with white. White and neon can be a visually blinding disaster. Also, accessorize with killer shoes and not overkill jewelry.

CF: What's your go-to outfit for those especially hot and humid Richmond summer days?

LR: On some hot and humid summer days in Richmond it feels like the best outfit to combat the elements is your birthday suit. Unfortunately, that is not socially acceptable. I love to layer, but it is nearly impossible in Richmond in the summer. I stick to sheer or lace tops and distressed jean shorts during the day or a simple T-shirt dress. At night, when there is a little more chill in the air, I love cotton cami-dresses with sheer crop tops layered on top to give the outfit some personality, or a simple lace dress with sandals or wedges. As you can tell, I'm all about sheer, lace and cotton. You have to wear things that breathe in this city during the summer, otherwise you become a hot, sweaty, cranky mess.

How To: Neons and neutrals truly are a match made in heaven. Try a simple shift dress with neon piping, or a tangerine blouse with brown and white printed trousers. If you want to splurge, check out these sandals from Loeffler Randall.
